DIY Ceramic Gifts

These are a simple, fun DIY gift for almost anyone on your gift giving list! I'm sure you've seen the pluthera of DIY mugs and plates floating around on pinterest. The so called "sharpie" mugs. Well here's what you need to know: the regular sharpies don't work!! If it doesn't rub off on your hand first, it would take a miracle to run it through the dishwasher and come out with design in tact.

Here is the logic behind this method. You need to use an oil based paint pen, I choose sharpie brand but there are many other brands out there. (I got mine at Hobby Lobby) I also used a gold paint pen I already had from Wal-Mart. In order to get it to stick, you will have to get it hot enough to melt and incorporate your design within the glaze. You want to use a cheap ceramic item, the cheaper items have a thinner glaze and are easier to melt.

Here are the steps:
1. Create your design (don't freak out if you mess up, take the corner of a wet paper towel, spray a little windex and rub off the error. If it doesn't completely come off, use your finger nail or scrubby sponge)
2. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes (open a window cause it will stink!!)
3. When the timer goes off, turn the oven off but just leave your items in there to cool.
4. Let cure for 24 hours before lightly hand washing

Also, something you should know, after baking the colors will darken a little. So my bright red was a little more maroon for example.

  2. You are so creative! How did you learn to letter like that? Also where did you find your plates from? I keep seeing shapes I like, but they're not cheap so don't work well like you said!
